When might you need managers or publicists?
If you want to help your child get into acting, they will need an agent. It’s not yet necessary to have a whole staff that includes managers, agents and publicists; an agent is all you need for now.
If it comes to a point where your child has multiple offers with million dollar promises, that’s when you will need to hire more than just an agent. Until then, an agent will suffice. Don’t forget, every person on the staff takes a cut of the commission so when your child gets started, you don’t need to shell out any more than necessary. Each person on the team will take ten to twenty per cent of your child’s income so until there’s enough income to warrant it, don’t bother.
Some manager and publicist firms that are out there are preying on the naiveté of the amateur. Any manager or publicist who is willing to take on someone who isn’t yet working constantly and gaining momentum in their career should be considered suspect. For the time being, an agent is all you need because that’s who is going to get you auditions. A parent is perfectly capable of managing things until multiple offers are pouring in.
